Statement: This morning’s attack on Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester

Issued 2 October 2025 at 14:45

The Executive Committee of the Muslim Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester was shocked and horrified when its members heard about the attack on Heaton Park Synagogue earlier today. That this happened on our own doorstep has shaken us all to the core.

At the time of writing, we understand from the BBC News website that two worshippers at the synagogue have died from stab wounds, and that others have been seriously injured. The attacker has been shot by the police and is now confirmed to have died. We do not know the attacker’s name or identity.

There can never be any justification for a murderous attack of this kind. It is made even worse by the fact that the victims were at prayers on Yom Kippur, which is the holiest day in the year in Judaism.

Our unwavering support and heartfelt sympathies go out to the Heaton Park Synagogue congregation, and their Rabbi Daniel Walker, with condolences and prayers for the victims and their families.
