Celebration of International Women's Day

6 March 2011

More than 65 Muslim and Jewish women came together in creative harmony to celebrate the 100th International Women’s Day. This day of art, drama and creative writing was hosted by the The Muslim and Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester and held at the Manchester Town Hall. Women explored the theme “One hundred years one hundred voices.” They created their own individual interactive books based on quotes from inspirational women. They also shared stories from their childhoods.

Workshop facilitators Nikki Mailer and Laura Nathan were delighted by the response to this event “It has been so encouraging to see this great demand from women in both Muslim and Jewish communities to come together for such a positive and warm celebration” The women felt positive and empowered about meeting women from all walks of life and ages ranging from 16 up to 75 years! One participant felt the event was “relaxing, mind expanding, therapeutic, and the conversations and meeting more friends was great,” and many women expressed how much they enjoyed taking the time out to partake in activities which they wouldn’t normally do.

The women are looking forward to the next years International Women’s Day event which is funded by Manchester City Council and Faiths in Action. Nikki Mailer says “what would be really lovely is to find funding to keep the event going every year, and hopefully for a sustainable project where the women can meet more frequently during the year."
